The demands placed on a computer used for professional purposes are often significantly different to those used in other areas.  Emphasis is placed on higher quality components to ensure reliability in the Workplace or Home Office set up.

Depending on the work, there will be a focus on the graphics card.  For low intensity applications, a basic graphics card will often suffice, but for those involved in CAD, Design, Video Editing, Animation etc, the Graphics Card will play a crucial role and the FireGL and Quadro cards will come into their own. 

RAM of 1GB is the minimum recommendation , but 2Gb is recommended for a 32 Bit Operating System such as XP Pro.  For larger RAM amounts, consider a 64 bit Operating System but consider compatability with your existing hardware and applications.

Vista or not? There are issues and whilst SP1 has gone some way towards addressing them,  it's still early days (relatively speaking) and most people continue to focus on Windows XP Pro since they need certainty in a working environment.
